A Quick Look At Bulldozers - How They Evolved Through The Years

The basic features of bulldozers typically consist of a dozer blade on the front and a ripper at the back. These are use to hold, dig up, or shove large piles of rock, soil, and other earthen materials. Throughout the years, bulldozers have greatly improved and fitted with advanced features to increase their functionality for different applications.

The earlier forms of bulldozers were actually used in farming. From there, these were also used in the military. It was not until in 1923 that the first prototype of a bulldozer was made. Today, a bulldozer is seen as powerful heavy equipments, with all their large structure and sophisticated controls, which are very useful in doing large and complex workloads. A modern bulldozer is now fitted with hydraulic cylinders and a GPS device to make way for maximum control and précised positioning.

The capacity of a bulldozer to perform different complex tasks depends on a number of things, like its size, attachments, and most especially, on the type of blade and ripper. There are actually three types of dozer blades: straight blades, universal blades, and S-U blades. A straight blade is the standard type that’s almost flat on the inside, lacks side wings, and mostly used for fine grading to prepare the ground for paving or planting seeds. Universal blades have deep curves, tall structures, and large side wings. Both the universal blade and S-U blade are ideal for hauling heavy loads, which are commonly done in mining and excavation applications.

One of the most popular manufacturers of bulldozer equipments is Caterpillar. The caterpillar d9 bulldozer is their most celebrated model that’s built for heavy-duty purposes. The Caterpillar brand is so famous that the “oswalt bulldozer” is actually a Caterpillar D6N XL all-purpose bulldozer. This was an incentive gift received by Houston Astros’ pitcher, Roy Oswalt, after their team’s 6th game victory.

Bulldozer machinery is not only popular in the mining or farming fields. These have also been a popular theme in many popular songs and movies. Soundgarden actually made a song that’s entitled slaves & bulldozers, which was included on their Badmotorfinger album. In the movie lo chiamavano bulldozer, a former football star turned fisherman was hired by a bunch of street people to become their trainer to help them win against a local Army base team.

Unfortunately, a bulldozer can be easily transformed into a weapon of mass destruction, such as what happened in Granby, Colorado in 2004. The Granby Colorado bulldozer, which is a Komatsu D335-A model, was used by Marvin Heemeyer to exact revenge because of a zoning dispute. Luckily, there were no people that got hurt, but it managed to destroy $7 million worth of property damage.

A bulldozer is an expensive investment. So, it’s wise that you study carefully the model that you want. Make sure that it has the correct size, attachments, and capabilities fit for your most common applications. Some of the trusted brands of bulldozers today are Caterpillar, Komatsu, and John Deere.

Buying in a New Subdivision Carries Some Risks

By Joel D McDonald
Some people might think that being among the first to buy in a new subdivision might be an advantage, but you have to think of several factors because it can also carry some risks. When a subdivision is being built, there might be a few houses here and there and not too much local traffic. Some people enjoy this, but what traffic there is could be construction trucks, carpenters, bulldozers and other noise as more new houses are being built. In the case of subdivisions that have a bunch of homes that are only semi-completed, some new homeowners might be dismayed to see them sit that way for a number of months.
