Granby Colorado Bulldozer Incident - What's The Buzz All About?
The Granby Colorado Bulldozer (the Killer Dozer) is like the Mr. Hyde version of bulldozers. If fallen into the wrong hands, devastation and compromised public safety are unavoidable. Scary but true. Should we stop using bulldozers? Of course not! The Granby Colorado Bulldozer is clearly not the perfect example of how bulldozers are meant to be used.
In June 4, 2004, Marvin John Heemeyer, a local businessman, decided to turn his Komatsu D335-A into an armored vehicle to exact revenge because of a zoning disagreement. He was clearly irked because of the horrible wreckage he left behind, which, by the way, caused around $7 million. Luckily, there were no reported human casualties.
The Komatsu Company, manufacturer of the Granby Kill Dozer, is not just any manufacturer. It’s actually one of the toughest competitors of Caterpillar. This Japan-based company produces different models of construction, agricultural, forestry, and mining machines, from compact to full-size heavy bulldozers, backhoes, and skid steer loaders. As what you can see with the Granby Colorado Bulldozer, they really make sturdy and dependable machines.

On a different note, work-related accidents are treated as a more real and immediate concern in every bulldozing operations. That’s why safety (for the public and workers) is greatly emphasized in the work place. Safety involves a lot of things, and it is most likely to start with a well-conditioned dozer and qualified operator. A qualified operator is a must in using any heavy equipment, may it be a crawler loader or a backhoe tractor. These types of machines contain complicated and several types of control buttons and joysticks. An inexperienced and uninformed driver is not only a hazard to himself, but also to his co-workers. Most of the time, safety training courses are offered to many dozer operators out there. Modern mining and construction heavy equipment machines are really way ahead of their predecessors. They contain all the hi-tech features that are needed to make way for an effective and safe land clearing jobs. Some are fitted with GPS navigation devices to help the operator to smoothly navigate through his location without problems. A safe bulldozer should also contain warning lamps, over speed prevention settings, and auto-brake retarders (slows down the vehicle), among other else. But of course, there’s no replacement for manual checking by a qualified technician to check if the unit is in tip-top shape before use. Construction, mining, forestry, and agricultural development works couldn’t be possibly done in a quick and effective manner without the use of some kind of heavy-duty machine. Could you imagine workers doing manual digging and dumping of earth piles? It would take forever before they finish the job. That’s why craw loaders, excavators, backhoes, skid steer loaders, etc. are truly indispensable tools. While incidents like the Granby Colorado Bulldozer rampage are clearly unavoidable, accidents, however, can be prevented with suitable safety guidelines and practices in the work place. |
