Lo Chiamavano Bulldozer: It's Not What You Think It Is

Lo chiamavano bulldozer literally means “They Call Him the Bulldozer”. It’s a 1978 Italian movie that revolves around the story of Bulldozer, played by Bud Spencer, who is a retired football player turned coach for a bunch of amateur street people to help them win a match against a local army team. If you relate the movie “lo chiamavano bulldozer” to an actual dozer, could there be any connection?

Bulldozer — the protagonist in lo chiamavano bulldozer — definitely looks intimidating because of his built. He’s tall, burly, and strong. If you look at real bulldozers (the ones that you see on construction sites), they also carry the same characteristics. Dozers practically destroy everything in their paths (rocks, dirt, rubbles, etc.) if you let them. Without these, construction and land development projects wouldn’t possibly be done with ease and accuracy.

Dozer machines are available in different sizes. They can be small or medium built to fit constricted places. But for large-scale bulldozing, the larger types are considered the best vehicles for the job. In fact, the Komatsu D575A-3SD is probably the world’s largest bulldozer ever produced. It stands about 41 ft tall, 24 ft wide and 16 ft high. You’ll even be more amazed when you see the Komatsu D575A-3SD in action.

The ripper is one of main tools that a track-type dozer has on its back part. Its features resemble that of a claw and exactly functions the same way; it rips the ground in order to smash rocks and loosen the soil. Rippers have hydraulic arms to help them dig deeper into the earth. It’s an optional tool that can be positioned manually.

Bulldozers have three standard blade types. But it could have more depending on the manufacturer. Caterpillar track-type tractors, for example, can also be fitted with a Straight blade, Universal blade, and S-U blade. But with their d6 dozer, it has a fourth kind of blade, which is called the VPAT (Variable Pitch Angle and Tilt) blade. The VPAT blade is present in their d6 model. It’s more flexible compared to others because it is capable of tilting forward and backward, can be raised, and positioned in different angles.

The Caterpillar DR11 is just one of the 300 heavy equipment machines that the Caterpillar Company manufactures. Their machines are well-trusted and used in so many applications, from small to large-scale jobs. Their d9 bulldozer is even used by foreign armies as a modified armored vehicle.

Bulldozers are really big and powerful. And through the years, they have undergone significant innovations and improvements so as to step up their performances to fit wider scopes of applications. Just like the main character in lo chiamavano bulldozer, the real bulldozers are real forces to be reckoned with.
